The interior design industry faced many challenges during the global pandemic of 2020. Social distancing made it difficult to be on site, restrictions on travel impacting both the client and business partners and some factories supplying raw materials greatly reduced operational capacity to cope with the unknown. These are just some of the hurdles faced in our industry which resulted in us pivoting the way we communicated with clients, site work, sample submissions and approvals etc.
Naturally, Construction and Interior design can be a complicated process from pending municipal approvals to material delays on any given day, let alone during a global pandemic.
It takes a strong interior design professional to spin those plates all while managing client expectations when the world is going through multiple lock-downs with the feeling of ‘no end sight’.
The Team at Sofia Sardo by Design were no strangers to the challenges faced during the pandemic and thankfully, with the help and understanding of our clients, we faced them head on together with our client and delivered on promise for our client’s luxury Vilamoura villa project.
We honestly couldn’t have asked for better client’s and contractors to work with during this difficult and uncertain time and are proud of the outcome for their interior design project.

We are shining a spotlight on our client’s project today to discuss the overall project and how we overcame external factors beyond our control and how we executed a stellar project our client was satisfied with.
In The Beginning
As a full-service interior design agency, it is our dream to receive ‘blank canvas’ projects. A ‘blank canvas’ or ‘white box’ project is the purest foundations on which we build our interior design executions. We bring in our industry knowledge and expertise to accurately plan, fulfil and decorate in line with the client’s vision and longevity in mind.
For this project we were given ‘four walls’ with nothing more than floors, doors and windows and a design brief to create a modern Algarve villa for those seeking luxury in European Summers.
Our client lives in the United Kingdom and often travels to the Algarve, seeking sun and sea it comes as no surprise they would eventually invest in property in the prestigious Golden Triangle.
With the plot of land purchases, building began in 2020 and Sofia Sardo by Design was introduced to the client for potential interior design works for the Vilamoura Vila.
Instantly we hit it off with the clients and creatively collaborated with ease. We concluded with the property’s mood boards and material finishes for a modern luxury Algarve villa boasting 6 bedrooms, an open-plan living and dining space, outdoor furniture, basement entertainment room and more…
Investing in a project of this size not only included construction but also interiors which meant a lot of spinning plates and the biggest challenge our clients faced was being abroad. This meant they entrusted us with their baby, to be their eyes and ears on the ground when they couldn’t.
Little did we know a global pandemic was about to hit and shake up the process altogether…
Bringing The Vilamoura Villa Project To Life
During the briefing we were given a guide to create a theme for each of their young adult children’s rooms. Collectively we created the Liberty, Sauvage and Flow bedrooms.
The Liberty Bedroom boasts a fun and playful nature with the funky modern destination posters and soft pastel colour stoneware side tables from our trusted HK Living range.
The Sauvage and Flow Bedroom have uncomplicated sophistication with bespoke upholstered headboards and premium bedding to suit each other.
For the master bedroom, our client desired a wow-factor piece in the bedroom that was built to impress while maintaining longevity.
We created a floor to ceiling bespoke fluted wooden wall panelling and oversized plush headboard with built in electrics for both our client and holiday makers to enjoy.
Throughout the master and guest bedrooms, we chose to create a mix of bespoke and catalogue furniture to meet the demands of a luxury holiday rental while maintaining our client’s style and vision in mind.
Some of the exciting things we were able to design and produce for the client included:
The master bedroom oversized headboard and fluted wall panelling detail
The basement guest bedroom floating leather headboards
Bespoke stone top extending interior dining table
Playful bespoke outdoor soft furnishing to complement the high-end outdoor lounging furniture
The living room oversized, plush ombre ocean blues and lime green rug
Installation Day at The Villa
Fast forward a year and installation day was nearly upon us. The team pulled together to deliver, unpack, count, clean and install in record time. It was all hands-on-deck to make the house a home and our teams worked across several days to put it all together, bit by bit we made progress in each area of the home and saw it coming together beautifully.

The Final Touches
During post-installation follow up meetings the client requested abstract artwork to fill the space above the grand floating staircase and open walls within the shared living and dining space.
The size of the walls and open space available called for some bespoke artwork of a grand scale, and we knew just the artist to make this happen!
The briefing between the client and Bianca took place at the property, looking at the space available and how they could incorporate elements of their life back in the England.
Providing the clients with as much information as possible on the creative process behind her abstract paintings, Bianca provided a basic overview of what the artwork would look like and the process for layering, drying and applying multiple mixed media to create truly unique pieces. Once happy with the process and overall colour scheme, it was full steam ahead with bespoke canvas stretching and material sourcing.
The paintings now proudly hang in the property above the staircase and in between the lavish living and dining space as requested and we think they are the perfect investment in the villa.
Working on our client’s Vilamoura Vila was an absolute pleasure, from start to finish. Despite the challenges and work-arounds due to the pandemic, the team banded together to form a strong bond with the client to ultimately execute the project they desired and one we were proud to present.
